Martha Phillips

After several years of doing representational paintings I felt I needed something that would allow me to push my painting to a more energetic level. I wanted to feel what I was painting. I found that in doing Abstract Art. By not focusing so much on the result I am able to express the simple joy of working with the basic language of color, line, shape., movement and texture to pursue a more unrestricted way of painting. I strive for a simpler yet elegant way to express myself.

My process reflects my state of mind. I am concerned with the physical, the emotional, the mental and the spiritual. My painting is about the struggle between balancing control with spontaneity. My paintings are nonobjective with no preconceived expectation of how they will turn out. Each work takes on a life of its own throughout the process. I will quickly cover the canvas in one work session and then continue to revisit it for several days, adding, subtracting, reframing it until in my mind’s eye any confusion and clutter is removed, and I have a clear view.

I use acrylics, fluid acrylics, inks, pastels and collage materials in my paintings. Sometimes I combine materials and at other times I use them independently based on my emotional state when I am executing the work. I tend to use inks and pastels on watercolor paper and Acrylics and acrylics with collage elements on canvas. I enjoy trying out new materials as they become available. I find comfort in the familiar and exhilaration in the unknown. Experimentation is a constant in my work, pushing the boundaries allow for continual growth as an artist.

My painting is what keeps me sane in a turbulent world.
